Is your laptop missing a serial port?
Most modern laptops are no longer fitted with a serial port, so what do you do if you replace your laptop, but still have a serial port tool you need to use?
As long as your laptop has an 'ExpressCard' expansion slot, you can use this RS-232 Serial Port adaptor.
The adaptor plugs into the side of the laptop, and interfaces directly with the PCI bus of the computer, making it more reliable (and compatible with more software) then the more common USB to Serial adaptors.
Will it fit my laptop?
There is more than one standard for the expansion slots fitted to laptop computers, so you need to ensure your laptop has an ExpressCard slot, not the earlier PC-Card, CardBus or 'PCMCIA' slot.
The easiest way to tell the difference is to measure the width of the slot, and look inside it.
- If the slot is 34mm wide, it will be an ExpressCard slot
- If the slot is 54mm wide, it may be either PC-Card or ExpressCard, so look inside the slot.
On the newer ExpressCard system, the connector inside is only 34mm wide, so there is a plastic guide across one side of the port:
On the older PC-Card system, the connector inside is the full width of the port:
This card will only fit an ExpressCard slot.
It will NOT work on an earlier PC-Card / CardBus slot.
